FAQ about Acupuncture and Infertility

A: Because of the complexity of infertility, multiple treatments are needed to ensure optimal success. Fertility treatments vary from person to person.
  • If you are trying naturally, are usually scheduled for at least twelve weeks (three consecutive cycles). Efficacy can usually be seen within one to three courses. It is advised for those undergoing treatment to have patience and to understand that it takes time to get the body back into balance and to build up the Qi and blood. In conjunction with acupuncture treatment, herbal medicine is highly recommended to significantly improve the possibility of fertilization, a smooth pregnancy, and an uncomplicated birth.
  • If you are using acupuncture with Assisted Reproductive Therapy - ART (IVF/IUI), the treatment period will vary depending on the success of the procedure. Most of our patients are able to get pregnant in their first trial combing with our acupuncture service.
A: It will depend on each individual case. For example, if the patient has high FSH or poor ovarian reserve, we need to start acupuncture at least 2-3 months before the IVF cycle to prepare the body. If patient has tried and failed 1-2 cycles of IVF, we also recommend to start acupuncture 2-3 months before the new cycle. However, it is recommended that weekly acupuncture treatments begin between 8 and 12 weeks before commencing your cycle because acupuncture has a cumulative effect on enhancing fertility and it helps prepare your body to maximize your IVF cycle.
A:
  • Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine help to improve ovarian function by increasing blood flow to that region of the body. This may allow for the development of better quality eggs and strong, healthy embryos.
  • Acupuncture increases blood flow to the uterus. Studies indicate that increased blood flow to the uterus can help to promote follicular development and encourage implantation of the embryo.
  • Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can help support the ovaries to respond more efficiently to the hyper-stimulating drugs thereby allowing for the production of more follicles.
  • Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can regulate estrogen and progesterone levels which can augment the lining of the uterus for proper implantation.
  • Acupuncture strengthens the immune system. Since approximately half of chemical pregnancies miscarry, one of the treatment goals is to boost the patient’s immune system using acupuncture and herbs.
  • There are high levels of physical and emotional stress associated with trying to get pregnant. Acupuncture and herbs are very effective in reducing stress and alleviating the side-effects of the hyper-stimulating medications, which help the patient to be calm and relaxed.
  • Acupuncture treats the root cause of female infertility and many other gynecological conditions that contribute to infertility such as irregular menses, endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes and PCOS.
A: Yes, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can be a safe, effective and cost-saving choice for improving fertility and addressing root causes of both female and male infertility. Acupuncture and herbs can positively impact your chances to conceive in a drug-free and non-invasive way. This knowledge has been known among Chinese physicians for over two-thousand years and is now being widely accepted and verified by Western medicine.

A: An increasing number of women are visiting acupuncture clinics seeking help in correcting the hormone imbalances (FSH, LH, progesterone, prolactin, etc.).
Acupuncture treatments can be very helpful in regulating hormonal imbalances through influencing the hormonal regulation centers in the brain and autonomic nervous system (i.e., the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis).
A: Acupuncture treatments can begin at anytime for the treatment of female infertility. However, because acupuncture has a cumulative effect on increasing fertility, it is recommended to have weekly acupuncture treatment for at least 12 weeks before trying to get pregnant to prepare your body and maximize your natural cycle.
A: Yes, according to several studies, one of which was published in the July, 2006 issue of Fertility and Sterility, the treatment of idiopathic male infertility can benefit from employing acupuncture. Since there are few Western medical treatment choices for male infertility, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can offer a safe, drug-free and non-invasive method to promote combined fertility for a couple.
Preferably, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine treatment should commence as soon as possible, 10-13 weeks before the semen collection, since sperm usually take between 70-90 days to mature and to allow the cumulative effects of the medicine to accumulate. Ideally, one or two treatments, per week, should be administered leading up to the semen sample to maximize male fertility.
A
  • Improves ovarian function. After 3 to 6 months of acupuncture treatment, women can improve their egg quality.
  • Improves adrenal gland function, so women can produce more progesterone to improve their luteal phase.
  • Improves thyroid function.
  • Balances the nervous system to heal ovarian cysts.
  • Improves blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, so your uterus lining is just right for implantation.
  • Balances immune function, so women will not produce antibodies to attack the sperm and fertilized eggs.
  • Improves digestive function, so women can absorb minerals and vitamins more efficiently, helping their body produce more balanced hormones.
  • Relaxes uterus muscles to prevent miscarriages due to advanced maternal age.
A: Acupuncture can help increase the success rates of IVF/IUI.
  • Acupuncture reduces the tone of the sympathetic nervous system during IVF/IUI treatment. Acupuncture can reduce facial blushing, hot flushes, high-blood pressure, and headaches due to the stress. Having a hyperactive sympathetic nervous system can lead to insufficient blood flow to the ovaries and uterus during IVF/IUI cycles.
  • Acupuncture also lessens mood swings, hand tremors, and insomnia during IVF/IUI, which helps the body produce more progesterone through deeper sleep and relaxation. The higher the stress levels are, the lower the progesterone levels are. Lowered progesterone levels can also lead to abnormal development of a fetus’ brain and post-partum autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, MS, ALS, Lupus, and scleroderma.
  • Acupuncture can help women improve their digestive system function by combating nausea, acid reflux and indigestion during IVF/IUI. Improved digestion can make women produce more progesterone to facilitate healthy pregnancies with IVF/IUI or natural pregnancy.
  • The injection of hormones during IVF/IUI can lead to emotional changes such as fear of treatment failure, panic attacks, feelings of helplessness, and anxiety. These emotional changes can reduce the success rates of IVF/IUI. Acupuncture can make the body produce more relaxing hormones so women with infertility undergoing IVF can have less stress and more relaxation.
  • Acupuncture during IVF/IUI also helps women with infertility improve their concentration and reduce mental disturbances. As a result, they have less negative thoughts.
A: Acupuncture also has precautions and contraindications. If you go to an experienced practitioner, acupuncture is a safe procedure.
A: Acupuncture can help many common conditions during pregnancy include morning sickness, nausea & vomiting, leg swollen, back pain, carpal tunnel, sciatica, hip pain migraines, fatigue, heartburn, constipation, insomnia and anxiety/stress.
A: Yes. It can help both conditions.

Acupuncture and Infertility Research

Acupuncture for fertility and IVF/IUI is a safe, effective and drug-free choice that has been proven in various medical studies to increase conception. According to a recent study published in the British Medical Journal in 2008, acupuncture for infertility is thought to augment fertility in three ways:

  • Acupuncture may mediate the release of neurotransmitters, which may in turn stimulate secretion of gonadotrophin releasing hormone, thereby influencing the menstrual cycle, ovulation, and fertility.
  • Acupuncture may stimulate blood flow to the uterus by inhibiting uterine central sympathetic nerve activity.
  • Acupuncture may stimulate the production of endogenous opioids, which may inhibit the central nervous system outflow and the biological stress response.

Acupuncture Fertility & infertility(IVF/IUI) Testimonial

I had been trying to get pregnant for 5 years and had gone through one failed round of In Vitro Fertilization. My diagnosis didn’t look good: poor quality eggs. At 35, I was devastated that I wouldn’t be able to have my own children. At the urging of my new Reproductive Embryologist, I tried IVF one more time. I had heard that acupuncture helped a great deal with the stress associated with infertility. I was willing to give it a try.
I began seeing Dr. Yang in January. Upon first meeting him, I was struck by his kind and gentle manner. He immediately put me at ease. He had me come in twice a week for treatments. Along with infertility, I had major stress issues and allergies. I started to feel better after the first treatment. I was no longer lying awake at night with stress, I felt energetic, and I felt that I was in control of my body. I hadn’t felt this good in years!
After about a month of treatments, I began my IVF cycle. It was a success! I am now awaiting my first child. It is truly a miracle. I am convinced that Dr. Yang’s work was instrumental in my pregnancy. He is an expert at what he does. He really cares about the health and happiness of his patients.

He is a true miracle worker! Three weeks ago I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, something that I never thought would be possible. My husband and I had tried for over 5 years to have a baby. Over the course of those 5 long years, I experienced 4 miscarriages, and various treatments from numerous doctors. When I had just about given up hope of ever having children, my friend told me about Dr. Yang. I figured it couldn't hurt to try acupuncture, yet I was weary about getting my hopes up. It turns out it was the best decision I could have ever made. Dr. Yang was so kind and caring, and I immediately felt extremely comfortable with him. Once I started acupuncture and herbs, I was pregnant within three months. I continued acupuncture with Dr. Yang throughout the course of my pregnancy. He was so supportive. Words cannot begin to express my gratitude to Dr. Yang. Last week I had the pleasure of introducing my little Mary to Dr. Yang. It was something that I had envisioned over the course of my pregnancy, and it was a very special moment. I can never thank Dr. Yang enough for all that he did for us.

I had been through multiple IVF cycles prior to trying acupuncture with Dr. Yang to help in conception. Dr. Yang has been able to help me greatly with my anxiety, stress and insomnia. I was much less stress, sad, anxious, or lonely, and I was able to sleep very well through the whole IVF cycle. I felt very comfortable and confident during the IVF cycle. I am very glad that I am pregnant now. Dr. Yang’s acupuncture and herbs made the difference. Thanks to Dr. Yang’s help.

My husband and I had been trying to conceive for 4 years. I was diagnosed with PCOS and started clomid treatments along with progesterone in November of 2017. We were on our 4th cycle of clomid and still no pregnancies. I was devastated and was lost of hope. I came across Dr. Yang Acupuncture and talked it over with my husband and we decided to give it a shot, best decision we ever made! I stop taking progesterone and clomid and focused all my energy and trust in the process of Acupuncture. I began Acupuncture on 1/12/18 and after 12 sessions and a couple of weeks taking his amazing herb. I got a POSITIVE pregnancy test!!! I couldn't believe it! We were actually pregnant!!! I'm so grateful to the doctor Yang for all the positive energy and well wishes the Dr. Yang is truly blessed with a great gift! Please, don't give up hope, if you are like me and feel like you have tried everything do yourself a favor, have faith and give Energy Body Acupuncture Clinic a chance, you won't regret it.

A year ago I found out that I had a thyroid issue and I had to stop trying to have a baby until my thyroid was fixed. After a couple of months being treated by an endocrinologist my thyroid was more or less stabilized so I started trying to conceive again but I didn´t have any results for almost a year so I decided to give a try to acupuncture. My first visit was magical; Dr. Yang found out many of the things that were wrong in me just by taking my pulse and looking at my tongue. We set up a weekly therapy that combined acupuncture and some herbs made especially for addressing my issues. Every time I went to his office the experience was amazing. He was totally involved in my case, made me feel special and gave me all the support that I needed to overcome these difficult moments. Two months and a half after starting with him I found out that I was pregnant. I still cannot believe it! I´m still seeing Dr. Yang weekly and enjoying my sessions. I don´t have enough words to thank him for all the things he has made for me.

I began seeing Dr. Yang several months ago after two miscarriages and almost two years of trying to conceive. Additionally, I had been on antidepressants and sleep meds for over ten years. After just a couple months of treatment (with acupuncture, herbs, and healthy lifestyle coaching), I am now free of all medications, sleep wonderfully, have excellent energy and mood, and, most important, am 12 weeks pregnant with a healthy baby! I feel so grateful to have Dr. Yang in my life!
